He Chose You From The Beginning…
Did you know that God chose you from the beginning.
Beginning of what?
Glad you asked.
The beginning of time, my friend.
Before there was ever a clock to keep your days, minutes and hours in check –
God. Chose. You.
If you are a book lover, I’m sure you love old books. It’s that distinctive smell of old paper.
And if you’re anything like me, you take a big breath in as your fingers flick through the really old pages.
Ahhhh, that smell!
This week I was privileged to hold a very valuable old book. It was 342 years old.
Yep. 342 years old!!
It wasn’t just any old book though; it was a Geneva Version Bible.
As I looked through it, I could imagine all the people who had owned this Bible. How many hands it had passed through in the corridors of time. How many bookshelf’s it had sat on, or how many times it had been read?
I carefully turned the pages to the front and the back of the book and discovered it had been written in by its previous owners.
The dates – 1674, 1747 and 1884.
The names – Stephen, Thomas and Edith graced the pages, reminding anyone who looked through it, that they had existed.
God knew them in a time where there was no television or internet or mobile phones.
In those days a Bible was an important part of your book collection.
And they had each owned this Bible that now sat in my hands in the year 2016.
And then I saw something.
And then I saw something. It was an inscription. Not a name, or a date, but a verse of Scripture.
As I read it, it arrested my heart.
‘God hath from the beginning chosen you to Salvation through Sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.’
That Scripture is 2 Thessalonians 2:13.
Living by Faith
Sanctification means, ‘Living by faith and trust in His Word.’
It felt as though the person who had written that inscription was letting me know that I had been chosen and if I trust in God’s Word and live by faith, I will know the truth.
Like an echo from the past, this precious Saint was speaking to me.
It was as though our souls had been knitted together in that moment.
In Revelation 1:8 it says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Please don’t ever think that God is just this huge force that watches your every move, making sure you do the right thing like some kind of cosmic police officer.
God is really big on details.
And He’s really big on relationship.
He walks with you every day, hour, minute and second of your life.
Waiting for you to say, ‘Yes’ to Him.
Waiting for you to know the truth by reading His Word.
God had waited 342 years until I held that Bible in my hands, knowing that I would share my experience with you.
That’s how much He cares about me.
And that’s how much He cares about you!
