Traveling light – Leaving the baggage behind
“We’re only going for a week. Surely you don’t need that many clothes?”
I’m guessing, I’m not the only woman in the world who’s heard that question
When you’ve asked your husband to just, “hold the bag together while I zip it up”
Traveling light can be hard
But sometimes we’ve got to leave the baggage behind
Because our hands need to be empty to recieve the new blessings
That God has waiting for us
So
What do you need to set down so God can give you more?
TRAVELING LIGHT
We all love to hear about the Bible heroes
Who overcame difficult obstacles and circumstances
Stories like Joseph, David and Esther
That tell us how these people left their humble beginnings
And were lifted by God into places of honour
We tend to skip over their darkest moments as we read
Because we know how their stories are going to end
But we can miss the nuggets of wisdom
That God wants to teach us
If we move too quickly through these stories
These Bible heroes can become sanitized, 2D characters
If we’re not careful
Who have about as much willpower to get to where God was taking them
As a Labrador sitting next to a plate of biscuits
LEAVING THE BAGGAGE BEHIND
They had to leave a lot of baggage behind
And travel light to where God needed them to be
Was it easy?
No
It was a difficult road
To reach their destination
But in the end
It was worth it
God reminds us time and time again in His Word
To give Him the baggage
‘Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you…’ 1 Peter 5:7
‘Cast your burdens on the Lord, and He shall sustain you…’ Psalm 55:22
God is like the baggage handler at the airport of your destiny
Except, once you’ve checked in your baggage
It’s gone
Sometimes we can be carrying so much baggage into our future
That we’re asking God to just, “hold the bag together while we zip it up”
He gently reminds us
That we don’t need all that stuff
Only Him
“But, I DO NEED all that stuff!”
Is your response
And in the middle of all our excuses
As to why we can’t possibly leave the baggage behind
Because we desperately need to take everything along with us – just in case
God whispers four words
“Do. You. Trust. Me?”
God is asking us to leave behind the baggage
And travel light into the future He had promised
If we’re carrying that cumbersome suitcase along with us
Full of things that are just weighing us down
Then we aren’t fully trusting God
So, leave the baggage behind!
Travel light!
Because God has a great future for you
And you can’t reach for God’s promises, if your hands are full already
With all that heavy baggage, right?
