The unmade future – Creative chaos in 2019

Apple’s Chief scientist, Alan Kay, once said, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” Sounds like a cheesy, motivational slogan you’d find hanging on a staffroom wall.

But it may ring true.

THE UNMADE FUTURE

As 2018 prepares to take its final bow and we welcome 2019 onto the stage of history, we can feel overwhelmed by our unmade future.

The uncertainly of what the next twelve months will bring into the lap of our lives can make us feel uncomfortable. But, unless we trust the God who is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, to take our hand and guide us through the mountains and valleys of our purpose and destiny that’s waiting for us in 2019, we will never lean into the creative chaos.

Unlike us, God is not restrained by time. I always imagined that He’s been to our unmade future and just came back to tell us that we’re, “good to go” with a wink and a thumbs up.

But now I realise that’s not how God works.

CREATIVE CHAOS IN 2019

God is a creator, and He wants us to participate with Him in creating our unmade futures. With just the utterance of His voice, the emptiness and darkness became a universe. And as all of creation took shape in the creative chaos, so too will your future.

“At first the earth lacked shape and was totally empty…Then there was the voice of God.” Genesis 1:2

Our unmade futures can lack shape and sometimes feel totally empty. Void of anything good. But, through our constant interaction and communication with God we can keep moving forward into our unmade future. We need to be in His presence constantly so we can hear His voice. Prayer is an important part of the creative chaos so it takes shape and form.

God wants to sculpt and mould our futures by letting us make choices.

When my kids were small, I used to hold a chocolate bar in each hand and hide them around my back. I’d then ask my kids to either pick left or right. Now, I knew whichever hand they chose, it was good. And it’s the same with God. He has something good in His strong and mighty hands, we just have to make the choice.

“I gave you a choice today between life and death, between being blessed or being cursed. Choose life, so that you and your descendants may live!” Deuteronomy 30:19

God doesn’t dictate to us from a high and lofty place. He reaches out and listens to His children, helping us to create a future with Him through the creative chaos and pitfalls of life.

So, as you walk along the path of 2019 and into your unmade future, with a signpost that reads, “To who-knows-where.” Listen to the voice of God through the darkness and discomfort and trust the creative chaos.

Because the key is to “choose life” and to just keep moving forward.
