Moving Mountains Here To There

Let me ask you something…

What does your ‘here’ look like?

And what ‘there’ do you want to get to?

We all want to

Move from ‘here’

To ‘there’

In the shortest time possible

But what if your ‘here’ has a huge mountain in front of you?

What if your ‘there’ is over that mountain?

I’ve read Matthew 17:20 many times

And I read it again the other day

If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. Matthew 17:20 (NKJV)

God will remove my mountains!

Nothing is impossible!

But God asked me to read it again  –  Slowly this time

If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from HERE to THERE,” and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

It doesn’t say

“If your faith is as small as a mustard seed, this mountain will disappear into a puff of smoke.”

It says

“You will say to this mountain, move from HERE to THERE and it will move”

Wait a minute

I want my mountain of ‘whatever it is’ to completely disappear

And God is going to do it

Sorry folks

Unless you have David Copperfield’s number on speed dial so he can perform a ‘mountain vanishing act’ for you

That mountain ain’t disappearing

Because Matthew 17:20 says that

The mountain gets moved

With faith as small as a mustard seed

But what if your mountain is ginormous?

What if your mountain is one that you have created?

What if you had a huge mountain of debt say?

And you think to yourself:

“This mountain is never going to get from HERE to THERE”

I can’t pay those credit card bills back

I can’t put petrol in my car

And my family has been living on pancakes for a week

What if you can’t see your mustard seed of faith because it’s hidden underneath your backpack of shame?

Not all mountains that we face are put there by circumstances that are out of our control

Sometimes our mountain is built by our own making

Wrong decisions and bad choices become huge peaks that are so high, you can see the snow on the top of them

How can you move $70,000 of credit card debt from HERE to THERE?

On a mustard seed of faith?

That was the mountain my family faced for almost 6 years

And it was huge

But God says, ‘If your faith is as small as a mustard seed, you will say to that mountain, move from here to there.’

“But the mountain is gigantic God! How can it move from here to there?”

God says, “I’ll help you.”

First of all

He takes the backpack of shame off your back to reveal your mustard seed of faith

You can’t move mountains when your carrying that kind of weight

Shame is a thief and it will drain the strength you’ll need for your journey

Your mustard seed of faith is all you need to carry up that mountain

Romans 8:1 reminds us that, ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus…’

Your mountain is still visible

And you still have to climb it

But God provides the strength and courage for you to

Move the mountain from HERE to THERE

He creates safe places for you to rest while you’re in the process of moving that mountain

He provides food and water on the mountain to sustain you

He encourages you when you feel you can’t take another step

When all you want to do is curl up in a ball and wish the mountain disappeared completely

He teaches you that you can move your mountain

With just a little faith

You just need to

Then one day

You look down at your mustard seed of faith

And you discover that it’s turned into a story

Your story

Of how you had to humble yourself to ask for help when it felt uncomfortable

Of choosing what was right over what was easy

Of not wanting your children to repeat the mistakes you’d made

Of learning to forgive ourselves over bad decisions

Of rising strong and becoming brave through the challenges

We had moved our mountain

Was it easy?

No way

Sometimes it felt as though we were moving backwards instead of forwards

But little by little

The mountain started to move

Sir Edmund Hillary once said, “It’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves”

I think Matthew 17:20 tells us that we can move mountains

And not wait for God to remove them

Because God wants us to become bigger than the mountains we face

He wants us to know that even if your faith is as tiny as a mustard seed

YOU can move mountains

Only you have to trust Him

Because it takes strength and courage to move mountains

And your mountain moving experience

Helps other travellers when they face their mountains

Because you can tell them your story

Of how you moved the mountain

And if they don’t believe you

Just show them your mustard seed
