Follow the instructions!

Embrace the Edges and live the Adventure.

Like me, do you skim over instructions? Are you left with screws and bolts when you’ve attempted to make flat pack furniture? Don’t worry, you are in good company! We all have difficultly following instructions, but if you’re building your dream and you don’t follow the instructions it can set you up for a failure and wreak your chances of success. Embracing the ‘edges’ can help you to fulfil the calling on your life and live your dream.

The dictionary definition of the word ‘edges’ means to sharpen, a boarder, an edging. Edges are held in place to help you advance gradually or cautiously towards something. Like training wheels on your first bike when you were a kid, edges stabilise you as you figure out your identity, your purpose and what you’re passionate about.

I recently gave up my day job so I could pursue my calling which is to focus on you guys, finish my theology degree and write my book. Yes, it may seem completely crazy to give up a job in this season. However, I have prayed for years and followed God’s set of instructions that have been unique to my own calling and now I am embracing the adventure. I took the leap of faith and it wasn’t too scary! It’s been a lot of hard work but I’ve followed God’s instructions and it’s taken years of praying which has led me to this moment. If I didn’t embrace the ‘edges’ I wouldn’t be living the adventure now.

This isn’t a post to tell you to throw caution to the wind and embrace your adventure regardless of the outcome. God doesn’t do hotchpotch dreams where you get a warm, fuzzy feeling that you, “kinda-maybe-could-be-God-talking-to-me-sort-of-revelation-thing.” The God I know, and love is a God of order, not chaos. He doesn’t set you up for a failure or leave you hanging in your calling. However, He does give you a list of things to do that are unique to your dream. If you want to succeed, you must follow the instructions!

Look at Joshua. He had some big shoes to fill when Moses died. Leading the Israelites into the Promised Land was his calling. If you read Joshua 1:1-9 you’ll see a set of ‘edges’ given by God to guarantee Joshua’s success.

“Always be strong and courageous, and always live by all of the law I gave to my servant Moses, never turning from it -ever so slightly- so that you may succeed wherever you go. Let the words from the book of the law be always on your lips. Meditate on them day and night that you may be careful to live by all that is written in it. If you do, as you make your way through this world, you will prosper and always find success.” Joshua 1:7-8.

The journey Joshua embarked on had ‘edges’ to start with. Instructions from God that set him on the right path. He followed the instructions toward his calling and embraced the adventure with confidence. If you have been circling the circumference of your calling for the umpteenth time, wondering why God chose you for this adventure, you need to start following the instructions. God gives you ‘edges’ so you have the confidence to step into all He has for you and to live within perimeters of the faithfulness of God.

A good place to start is to figure out your true identity. Who does God say that you are? Once you know who you are and Who’s you are, you’ll embrace the edges and live your own adventure!
