Dressed for Success

If you were lacking self-confidence and self-esteem 30 years ago

A dark pinstripe suit with metallic buttons and big shoulder pads

Would be right up your street

This was how they dressed for success

Back in the day

“Power dressing” demanded respect and authority

By anyone who wore the uniform

Letting everyone know that they meant business

A confident, go-getter

Who wasn’t going to let anyone stand in their way

Dressed for success?

What could possibly go wrong?

DRESSED FOR SUCCESS

The trouble with this Fashion Armageddon mind-set

Is that it wasn’t about what they were wearing

It was what they were covering up

Unfortunately, some can still have that mind set of the 1980’s

Lack of confidence and low self-esteem

Is covered up by the large, intimidating shoulder pads and fitted sleeves

Of self-righteousness and religion

Hiding their shame and insecurities

Under a camouflage of power suits

The sad truth is

They start “power dressing” before God

Thinking it will impress Him

But as the prophet Isaiah points out

‘Our best efforts are grease-stained rags’

God isn’t interested in sophisticated power dressing

He just wants your heart

Unconditional love is want He offers

And in return, He just wants us

To love Him for who He is

He’s looking for someone who wants the intimacy of Worship

Who longs for His Presence

But you have to be dressed in the right outfit

‘…dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline…And regardless of what else you put on, wear love.’

These words in Colossians 3, thin out the crowd

There is no place for power suits here

No room for intimidating mind games

They can go take a hike

Wearing love is all that is required

And a heart that is prepared for commitment

Is what gets God’s attention

When we have a real relationship with God

There is no need to cover up anything

He sees it all

Because

When your knees ache from prayer

And your tears have soaked the carpet

Then, and only then, are you dressed for success

Love is the ultimate wardrobe!
